Facility deactivation and demolition is a major CHBWV
objective under the current contract. Many of the site's above ground
facilities will be removed and disposed of in the current contract. They
include:
The Main Plant Process Building (MPPB). The MPPB is a 5-story,
1960s-era concrete structure built to reprocess spent (irradiated) nuclear
fuel. Much of the equipment, piping and asbestos has been removed from the
facility in preparation for demolition. Additional areas are being
targeted to further reduce radiological and hazardous materials prior to
demolition.
The Vitrification Facility. The Vitrification
Facility was constructed in the 1980s to vitrify (solidify) liquid high-level radioactive waste
by immobilizing it in glass. The vitrification equipment has been
removed from the facility in preparation for demolition.
Miscellaneous Site Facilities. Several large and small radiological and
industrial structures will be demolished and disposed of by CHBWV. CHBWV's mission is to remove
approximately 40 structures
from the WVDP site by the end of the current contract.
